Last 14th September 2025, Canal Sur's ConCiencia programme broadcasted La paradoja del pensamiento [The Paradox of Thought], a report focusing on the research led by Javier Ortiz-Tudela, young Ramón y Cajal researcher from the CIMCYC, as part of the CONNECTS (Cognitive and Neural Computations of Semantics) research project, recently funded with €1.5 million by the European Research Council and lasting five years.
Both Javier Ortiz-Tudela and his new team seek to discover how the brain uses semantic information—that is, the relationships between different elements in our environment—to optimize our interaction with the world which surround us, through techniques, such as electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, among others.
Among the objectives set for the development of this project, one of the most relevant is to identify which cognitive processes benefit most from our stored prior knowledge and, on the other hand, which ones react most efficiently and productively to novel and unexpected events. At the same time, the team will focus on finding out which factors allow us to generate different types of memory if we understand thought as a continuous flow of processes.
We invite you to watch the full report to learn more about the objectives of the CONNECTS project. The program explains the neuroscience techniques used and their practical applications, featuring interviews with Javier Ortiz-Tudela and Miriam Tortajada Gomáriz, a researcher at the CIMCYC and a member of the project.
