HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS VISIT THE CIMCYC

High school students visit the CIMCYC

The Mind, Brain and Behavior Research Centre (CIMCYC) opens its doors to welcome high school students throughout the year, with the aim of guiding them in their future career. Last Friday, 25th of February, students from the Pedro Soto de Rojas high school visited the centre. The activity was organized in collaboration with their Psychology teacher, Mateo Casas Martínez.

María Ruz, director of the centre, started the visit with a brief explanation of all the fields and areas of research at the CIMCYC. Then, the students, divided into smaller groups, participated in four activities, each of them guided and explained by researchers from the centre.

1- TMS/fMRI Lab22: Elisa Martín Arévalo and Fabiano Botta were in charge of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. In this first activity, the students learned how to stimulate specific parts of the brain and inhibit others to see how these changes influence people’s behavior.

In addition, although they were only able to see the MRI scale model (the access is restricted to qualified personnel), they received a detailed explanation on how this equipment works.

2- tDCS & EEG/ arrows look Lab02: transcranial direct current stimulation and electroencephalogram. In lab 2, Greta Manini, Cristina Narganes Pineda, Belén Aranda Martín and Klara Hemmerich explained the functions and use of these two equipment.

3- iMotions/emotions Lab10: Tao Coll and Conchi Castellanos Baena showed how they study emotions. One of the tools to carry out this research is the iMotions equipment.

4- Stress tests/bike Lab09: Daniel Sanabria and Luis Fernando Ciria explained how researchers study brain and cognitive function while doing physical exercise.

To conclude, the students attended a talk given by Luis Ciria, postdoctoral researcher at the CIMCYC, where they received more information about research in the field of psychology, as well as about university studies in this area of knowledge.
