Its purpose is to smooth the path for researchers to apply these practices, which benefit the transparency and replicability of research.
What is open science?
Open science is a movement that seeks to make scientific knowledge accessible to the whole community. Its aim is to share data, methods and results transparently, so that both the research community and society at large can benefit from scientific advances in a more equitable and efficient way.
Why does this matter?
- Greater transparency and reproducibility: sharing data and methods makes it possible to verify results and improve research quality.
- Greater impact and visibility: open access studies reach wider audiences and tend to be cited more often.
- Collaboration and faster progress: it facilitates knowledge exchange and the generation of new ideas among researchers from different disciplines.
- Compliance with requirements: an increasing number of funding agencies require open science practices in research projects.
How can Open Science be incorporated into research?
Adopting open science guidelines may look daunting, but it is in fact simpler than it seems. It does not require abruptly overhauling the way you work. Small changes can make a big difference and improve the quality, visibility and impact of research.

CIMCYC's Open Science strategy
At CIMCYC we see Open Science not as a passing trend but as one of the strategic pillars of our centre's project. Our commitment translates into concrete, coordinated actions that support research staff throughout the entire research life cycle: from experimental design to the publication of results. Through these actions we aim to facilitate, normalise and encourage good open practices.
Since 2024, CIMCYC has held the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence distinction, awarded by the State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. This recognition places us at the forefront of science both nationally and internationally and, crucially, has enabled us to allocate dedicated human and financial resources to promoting Open Science, embedding it across the centre's scientific policies as one of the cornerstones of the excellence project.
How do we put our commitment into practice?
