PsychoBeers

The PsychoBeers scientific outreach initiative, launched in 2019 by researchers from the CIMCYC to bring knowledge about the mind, brain and behavior closer to the public, returns to Granada on October 28.

The first event of the 2025/2026 season will take place on Tuesday, October 28 at 8:30 PM in the Sala Planta Baja under the title "Sport and Brain: Neither Exercise Erases Trauma Nor Does the Elite Compete Without It." This session will address the relationship between sports practice, mental health and brain function.

For the event Luis Ciria, a researcher at CIMCYC, will present the talk “Can Crossfit Replace Your Therapist?” and Mikel Zabala, Professor of Sports Science at UGR and a cycling coach, will present “Dealing with the Elite Athlete's Mind.”

Both presentations aim to explore, from different perspectives, how physical activity influences cognitive and emotional processes and to debunk some common myths about the effects of exercise on psychological well-being. They will also discuss current evidence and studies conducted at the CIMCYC on the effects of exercise on the brain. Following the talks, the audience will be able to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and ask questions.

About PsychoBeers

PsychoBeers aims to bring Psychology and other cognitive sciences to the public outside the academic environment, favoring an informal, accessible and participatory format. Additionally, it seeks to foster an environment conducive to interdisciplinary dialogue and artistic expression.

During each session, experts from the UGR and other institutions share their research in brief, engaging talks, facilitating direct dialogue with the public. The events are usually held on the last Tuesday of every month, with free admission and a complementary offering of drinks and music that turns each date into a meeting point for science, leisure and culture.

PsychoBeers has established itself as a successful scientific outreach initiative, combining academic rigor with approachability and creativity to spark interest in psychology, neuroscience and cognitive sciences and their application in solving social problems, clinical practice, technological development, the improvement of individual and social well-being and the advancement of knowledge.

PsychoBeers is a project co-funded by the UGR's Faculty of Psychology and its Departments of Psychobiology, Social Psychology and Experimental Psychology, the Spanish Society of Psychophysiology and Affective and Cognitive Neuroscience (SEPNECA) and the Mind Brain and Behavior Research Center (CIMCYC).

The organizing team invites the entire university community and the public to participate in the new edition of PsychoBeers. Admission is free until capacity is reached!
