The Vice-Rectorate for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Granada has recognized the CIMCYC Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Laboratory as a unique facility, by the Regulations approved by Governing Council Agreement NCG163/3.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that allows the stimulation of the healthy brain using a coil that generates a magnetic current. This in turn creates an electric current perpendicular to the magnetic field, which can be used to either inhibit or excite a specific area of the brain. This technique is used to study the physiology and functioning of the brain in relation to human mental faculties and has also shown promising therapeutic applications.

The TMS Lab represents a strategic scientific infrastructure for the CIMCYC due to its high level of specialization, its advanced equipment and the significant impact of the research conducted there. The uniqueness of the laboratory is reflected in both the technique used and the combination of multiple equipment it includes, which is unique in Spain.

In addition, the laboratory shares space and synergies with the CIMCYC 3 Tesla functional magnetic resonance imaging unit, allowing for combined use. This complementarity has facilitated multiple international collaborations, attracted competitive funding of over €1.9 million and resulted in the publication of research results in high-impact scientific journals.

The recognition awarded to TMS Lab will enable it to enhance its capabilities, consolidate collaborations with national and international centers, advance multimodal combination with other techniques (such as magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography and eye movement tracking) and improve the training of research personnel.
